I am looking for some type of language preservation >software for the Cree language, if any exist. I've see a simple Cree word processor for the Macintosh that was produced in Ontario. A fellow I knew at the Assembly of First Nations office in Ottawa had a copy. I think the phone number there is (613)241-6789. One of my (very) long term project ambitions is to work on producing software in north american languages. The Macintosh systems support probably close to 100 languages (including some of the more complicated character sets like the Chinese), but no support for aboriginal languages - yet. Implementing support for the syllabics should not be technically difficult - it's a matter of people resources. However, because of the relativly small market, the big computer companies are not prepared to spend the time/money to do this work. I'd like to know what projects are currently going on for implementing aboriginal languages in computer software and operating systems. If there are others out there who would be interested in working on a project to help Apple implement the syllabics in the Macintosh system, please let me know. I don't have the resources (language-skill, time) to do it on my own, but could certainly coordinate a project if there were others involved. Most needed for the project would be people to translate the computer commands and terminology into Cree and other languages. It would also need a few computer geeks (that's a compliment, not a put down - I'm one myself :-) as well as a font creator. - -- grant@achilles.net http://arpp.carleton.ca/ O- <*> To find out about the Cree mailing list send a message to cree@arpp.carleton.ca with the subject set to the word: help http://arpp.carleton.ca/cree/ ki'htwa'm ka-wa'pamitina'wa'w ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: 9 May 1997 09:27:06 -0400 From: "Peter Bakker" <(suppressed)@hum.aau.dk> Subject: Re: information on Cree teaching software People in Saskatchewan developed some computer games to teach Cree. (Seems he had quite a temper!) Elmires' maiden name was Chartrand and she was Cree. There is/was a place called Chartrand Corners located in Sudbury, Canada which may have been founded by one of her family members named A.D. Chartrand. At one time in the 1970's ? the population was approximately 44. Pierre Dore' was an orphan, (Irish or Scottish) arrived in Canada via boat along with many other orphans from England ? and was adopted by a French family. As an adult he was a Veterinarin and possibly a Land Surveyor. It may therefore useful to look at: Sprague, D.N. & R.P. Frye. 1983. The genealogy of the first Metis Nation. The development and dispersal of the Red River Settlement 1820-1900. Winnipeg: Pemmican Publications, 1983. There is a recent similar book by a women called Morin (I forgot her first name). This is also consultable as a computer file in the library of the Glenbow Institute in Calgary, Alberta. Both books should make it possible to track down descendants of the first 'Gadoury' until the beginning of the century, and for the more recent data there are other sources, not in the least oral history. Peter Bakker ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: 27 May 1997 16:52:11 -0400 From: Sheila Macauley <(suppressed)@tiac.net> Subject: Cree Iserhoff Family I have been doing research for an aunt for the past 10 years who was always told she had Indian ancestry. Her great-grandmother was ELIZABETH ISERHOFF, b. cir. 1810/1811, in the “Pays Haut,” Quebec. I have discovered through research that Elizabeth’s father was JEAN BAPTISTE LEOPOLD ISERHOFF, b. cir. 1790 in Quebec. Jean Baptiste served as a clerk in the North West Fur Company and took as a wife, a Cree woman, name unknown. Jean Baptiste and his Cree wife had two known children, Elizabeth, b. cir 1810/1811 and a son Jean Baptiste Jr., b. 1814. These two children were brought to Berthier, Quebec and baptized at Ste. Genivieve de Berthier in 1820 and 1822. When Elizabeth was baptized in 1822 at the age of 11 years, her father is listed as “the late (deceased) JEAN BAPTISTE LEOPOLD ISERHOFF, ex-clerk of the Society of the North West,” and her mother is listed as a savage. The son, Jean Baptiste Jr., died according to the records of Ste. Genivieve de Berthier, in 1835 at the age of 21. Elizabeth and her brother were raised in Berthier by GUSTAVE ISERHOFF, the father of Jean Baptiste Leopold. GUSTAVE ISERHOFF was a German Hessian soldier and surgeon who fought for the British in the American Revolutionary war. JEAN BAPTISTE LEOPOLD ISERHOFF and his Cree wife had other children besides Elizabeth and Jean Jr. It is believed they might have had 3-4 other sons. There are many Cree in Canada today with the ISERHOFF name. I have been able to contact one Iserhoff descendant who was able to give me more information on some family members who were raised as Cree in the Mistassini and Waswanipi areas of Quebec. According to his family tradition, he thought the first Iserhoff was a shipwrecked Russian sailor. This is not true as I have documented proof that the first ISERHOFF to Canada was GUSTAVE ISERHOFF the Hessian soldier. I would like to connect with other family descendants who are interested in genealogy and compile more information for a family history on this interesting German-Cree family. Languages and place names from little nations, native cultures and minority languages almost never appear in the maps. Geography ignores us. I live in northeastern Indiana in the U.S. near the St. Marys, St. Joseph and Maumee Rivers. I am 43 and work as an engineering assistant. Since teenage I have been interested in native americans, starting with the Miami-Illinois language group that lived here in the 1700's. I read everything I could find and started collecting every scrap of their language I could find. "Where are the sturgeon that used to swim up the St. Marys River (sturgeon creek)?", I would ask friends and relatives. Nobody knew and nobody cared. Later I learned that the central algonquians were described based on one arboriginal researcher as follows: Central Algonquian Tribes 1. Kickapoo-Sauk-Fox 2. Miami-Illinois 3. Shawnee 4. Menominee 5. Potawatomi 6. Ojibway-Chippewa-Odawa 7. Cree For example, "duck" sounds something like "sisip" in some of these languages. Miami died out as a living language sometime before the 1970's, so why Cree? More than any of these tribes, the Cree, Potawatomies, and Ojibways probably have more speakers that are living on original land than any other group of indians in North America. I started collecting bibliographies and information on these languages until finding out about syllabics. Right away I knew I had to learn one of the syllabic languages. Finally, I got hold of a dictionary, grammar and source of written material for a specific dialect (more or less): The Cree School Board's 15,000 word dictionary in syllabic, Ellis's grammar (I rewrite it into syllabic as I use it), and _Nation_ published in Montreal. Another very usful resource is John Nichols' _Algonquian and Iroquoian Linguistics_ from the U. of Manitoba. Also it's possible to pick up CBC North, sometimes, on 9625 KHz. This means I can finally get started learning southern Eastern James Bay Cree, and plan to make progress towards that goal this summer (1997). Working in technology I am very interested in how the two relate to each other, language and technology. By working to bring the world closer together through technology, I also hope that the individuality of particular cultures is preserved, especially those of the Central Algonquians.
